Chapter 13
Utility & MIDI Control Center
Preset and global settings, plus wavetable and sample management.
Utility: preset settings
Press UTILITY to reach the settings that change how the MicroFreak behaves. Everything under Utility > Preset is saved with the preset, so each preset can have its own volume, bend range, pressure mode, scale and more. These settings exist only on the instrument — the MIDI Control Center doesn’t show them. Everything else in Utility is global (Utility: global settings).

Utility: global settings
Global settings apply to every preset: set the A reference to 441 Hz and all your presets play at that tuning. You can change all of them in Utility on the instrument or in the MIDI Control Center’s Device tab (MIDI Control Center). They’re grouped here as the manual’s settings tables group them.
MIDI
| Setting | Options | What it does |
|---|---|---|
Input chan | All, 1–16, None | The channel the MicroFreak receives MIDI on (MIDI channels and computers). |
Output chan | 1–16 | The channel it transmits MIDI on. |
Output dest | None, USB, MIDI, BOTH | Where the MIDI it sends goes. |
Local | Off, On | Whether the knobs and keyboard play the internal sound engine; On by default (Local control). |
Arp/Seq MIDI out | Off, On | Whether arpeggiator and sequencer notes go out over MIDI, to trigger other instruments or record in a DAW. |
Thru | Off, On | With On, whatever arrives at MIDI In is echoed to MIDI Out. |
Knob send CCs | Off, On | Whether the knobs send CC messages (Controlling with MIDI CCs). |
Merge | USB+KBD, MIDI+KBD, BOTH+KBD | How the keyboard’s data is merged into the MIDI stream. |
Sync
| Setting | Options | What it does |
|---|---|---|
Source | Int, USB, MIDI, Clock, Auto | Where the tempo comes from (Clock and sync). |
Clock | One step, 2PPQ, 24PPQ, 48PPQ | The pulse format of the clock jacks. |
Global Tempo | Off, On | With On, presets’ saved tempos are ignored and the tempo stays where you last set it. |
CV/Gate
| Setting | Options | What it does |
|---|---|---|
Pitch format | 1V/Oct, Hz/V, 1.2V/Oct | The voltage standard at the Pitch output (CV, gate and pressure outputs). |
Gate format | S-Trig, V-Trig 5V, V-Trig 12V | The gate voltage at the Gate output. |
Pressure range | 1V–10V | The voltage range of the Pressure output. |
0V reference | C-1–G8 | Which note outputs 0 V with the 1V/Oct or 1.2V/Oct pitch format. |
1V reference | C-1–G8 | Which note outputs 1 V with the Hz/V pitch format. |
Controls
| Setting | Options | What it does |
|---|---|---|
Knob catch | Jump, Hook, Scaled | How a knob takes over a value when its position doesn’t match — see below. |
Click to load | Off, On | Whether turning PRESET loads presets straight away or you press it to load (Loading presets). |
Osc Knob Speed | Slow, Fast | How quickly WAVE, TIMBRE and SHAPE change values. Slow, the default, suits fine edits; Fast suits dramatic live sweeps. |
KBD sensitivity | 10%–100% | How the keyboard responds, for both pressure and velocity (Keyboard response). |
Aftertouch curve | Lin, Log, Exp | The response curve for aftertouch. |
Velocity curve | Lin, Log, Exp | The response curve for velocity. |
Relative Bend | Off, On | With On, wherever you first touch the bend strip becomes zero bend (The bend strip). |
Knob catch
Jump- The knob sends its physical position as soon as you move it. If the stored value is 12 and you turn the knob from 3 to 4, the value jumps straight to 4.
Hook- Nothing changes until you turn the knob past the stored value and “catch” it.
Scaled- The knob nudges the stored value up or down from wherever it is: turning from 3 to 4 takes a stored 12 to 13. If the knob is already at an end, turn it the other way first. This is the default.
Velocity and aftertouch curves
Lin- An even response across the whole dynamic range. The default for velocity.
Log- Loud notes need the least force, but quiet dynamics are harder to control.
Exp- Less jumpy at low levels, but it takes more force to reach the top.
With Relative Bend off, the bend strip bends up or down from its physical centre. With it on, the point you first touch is zero and you bend from there — good for dive-bombs.
Global Scale, Master tuning and Mic Settings
| Setting | Options | What it does |
|---|---|---|
Scale | off, major, minor, harmominor, dorian, mixolydian, blues, penta | The scale for everything you play; off plays all twelve notes (Playing in a scale). |
Root Note | C, C#, D, D#, E, F, F#, G, G#, A, A#, B | The root of the global scale (The scale root). |
Cent offset | -50 to 50 | Detunes the whole instrument, in cents. |
A Reference | 427.47–453.89 Hz | Retunes A away from the standard 440 Hz — in effect the same as Cent offset. |
Mic Gain | -12 dB to 59 dB, Auto Gain | Microphone gain for the vocoder (Vocoder settings and mic levels). |
Noise Gate | Off, -30 dB to -90 dB | The level below which the mic input is ignored. |
Mic Detection | OFF, ON | With ON, active sensing checks that a microphone is connected. |
Misc
| Setting | Options | What it does |
|---|---|---|
Mem protect | Off, Factory only, On | Off lets you overwrite any preset; Factory only protects the factory presets; On protects your own presets from accidental overwrites too. |
Oct LED Blink | Off, On | Whether active octave buttons blink or glow steadily (Octave buttons). |
Reset setting | Cancel, Yes | Returns the MicroFreak to its factory settings. |

Worth knowing
- The MicroFreak sends and receives on a single 16-channel MIDI port.
- USB connects straight to a computer without a MIDI interface; MIDI cables can run over longer distances.
- Local control off is the DAW-friendly setting — see Local control.
- The Sync clock settings are for interfacing with pre-MIDI gear such as old Korg and Roland drum machines (Clock and sync).
- Mic Gain, Noise Gate and Mic Detection are for the TRRS microphone input and the Vocoder oscillator (Vocoder settings and mic levels).
- FW 5.0.0’s bank of 64 new presets is loaded from the MCC.

Loading your own wavetables
The Wavetables tab appears whenever the MIDI Control Center finds a connected MicroFreak. The wavetables you load here are played by the User Wavetable oscillator type (User wavetable) — not by any other type, including the factory Wavetable oscillator.
The tab
- The left pane shows the banks and wavetables on your computer; the right pane shows the wavetables inside the MicroFreak.
- Below them, fields show the names of the selected wavetable and its bank, next to a 3D animation of the wavetable. Click a field and type to rename — up to 21 characters.
The buttons across the top
New Bank- Creates an empty bank on the computer side and asks you to name it. Fill it by dragging wavetables from other banks onto its name.
Del Bank- Deletes a bank after a confirmation. Factory banks can’t be deleted.
Import- Offers
Replace Wavetable (.mfw)andReplace Wavetable (.wav/.aiff)to replace the selected wavetable with a file, andImport New Bankto add a .mfwb bank to the computer side. Export- Saves the selected wavetable as a .mfw file, or the selected bank as a .mfwb file, wherever you choose.
Delete- Deletes a single wavetable after a confirmation, replacing it with an init wavetable that morphs between simple waveforms.
Send to MicroFreak- Sends the selected computer bank into the MicroFreak’s memory for the User Wavetable oscillator.
Recall to Computer- Copies the wavetables currently in the MicroFreak into a new bank on the computer side, named with the date and time — rename it in the Bank Name field.
What happens when you import audio
- A MicroFreak wavetable has 32 cycles, each 2,048 samples long. WAV and AIFF files are resampled and converted to the MicroFreak’s .mfw format.
- Every 2,048 samples of the file count as one cycle.
- The file’s first and last cycles are kept unchanged as cycles 1 and 32.
- With more than 8 cycles, the cycles are spread evenly across the table with linear crossfades, so the result covers the whole file from start to end.
- With fewer than 8, a custom algorithm spreads them across all the slots so WAVE still reaches every cycle.
- In short, you don’t need to edit files first — any audio file can become a wavetable.
Dragging and dropping
- Drag wavetables between the computer and the MicroFreak in either direction. The destination slot turns blue as you hover; releasing overwrites it.
- Drag within a bank, on either side, to reorder it. On the computer side, drop a wavetable on another bank’s name to move it there.
- Drag WAV or AIFF files straight from your computer’s file browser onto either side.
- Shift-click or Command-click to select and drag several at once.
