The send effect

The K.O. II has one send effect at a time, chosen from delay, reverb, distortion, chorus, filter and compressor. Every group, and the live input, can send to it in different amounts. The whole mix then passes through a master compressor.

  1. Press FX (with the beat playing, so you can hear it).
  2. Use − and + to choose the effect.
  3. Select a group and move the fader to set how much of it goes to the effect.
  4. Turn X and Y to shape the effect — each effect’s knobs are below.

  • While the beat plays, hold SHIFT as you step through the effects with −/+ to reach the one you want without briefly switching on the ones in between. Holding FX shows each group’s send level as icon brightness. via Elektronauts: EP-133 Tips and Tricks

Delay

Delay repeats what you send it, like an echo off a valley wall. Short times thicken a sound; longer ones give rhythmic echoes.

FX · DelayPress FX, then −/+ to the delay.

LENGTHDelay length

The time between repeats.

Reverb

Reverb places the sound in a space. Turn the length up for big washes; use the colour to keep a long reverb from muddying the low end or turning harsh.

FX · ReverbPress FX, then −/+ to the reverb.

LENGTHReverb length

The size of the space, from a small room to a cathedral.

Knob X

8.4BasicsTE guide §11.3

Distortion

Distortion clips the peaks of the waveform, from gentle warmth to a smashed, fuzzy beat. The colour knob filters and resonates the result so you can choose where the grit sits.

FX · DistortionPress FX, then −/+ to the distortion.

DRIVEDrive

How hard the sound is overdriven.

Knob X

Chorus

Chorus layers moving copies of the sound to make it wider and richer. It thickens chords and pads, and does strange things to drums at high feedback.

FX · ChorusPress FX, then −/+ to the chorus.

MODModulation

The rate at which the chorus moves the sound around.

Knob X

Filter

The filter effect removes high or low frequencies from whatever is sent to it. One knob covers both directions — left of centre cuts the highs, right of centre cuts the lows — and resonance emphasises the cutoff for sweeps.

FX · FilterPress FX, then −/+ to the filter.

CUTOFFCutoff

Turn left to cut the highs, right to cut the lows.

Compressor (send effect)

As a send effect, the compressor pushes down loud peaks and brings up the overall level of the groups you send it — punchier drums with less dynamic range. Drive and speed together decide how hard it hits.

FX · CompressorPress FX, then −/+ to the compressor.

DRIVEDrive

How loud the audio going into the compressor is.

Effects on the live input

Anything plugged into the input can go through the K.O. II’s effect, so it works as an effects box for another instrument. Set the level and the send in MAIN mode.

  1. Plug the source into INPUT.
  2. Press MAIN.
  3. Turn X to set the input gain.
  4. Turn Y to set how much of the input goes to the effect.
  5. Press FX to choose and shape the effect.

Master compressor

Everything — groups, effect and input — ends up in the master compressor. More drive gives a more obvious squash; speed sets how quickly it reacts.

OUTPUT · Master compressorPress SHIFT + FX.

DRIVEDrive

More drive gives a more obvious compression effect.

Sidechain

Sidechain dips the volume of chosen groups whenever a chosen sound plays — the classic pumping bass under a kick. On the K.O. II it is triggered by notes rather than audio, so you can trigger it from a pad that makes no sound and shape exactly how long and how hard it ducks.

  1. Press SHIFT + FX, then + to reach the sidechain settings.
  2. Hold a group key and press a pad to add that sound as a trigger source.
  3. Hold SHIFT and press a group key to make that group duck.
  4. Turn X for the length of the duck and Y for its shape.
OUTPUT · SidechainPress SHIFT + FX, then +.
