Reading the labels
- On our map, the word under a key or pad is what it does with SHIFT held. Everything on the Shift button lists them all.
- The real panel prints those words under the pads, but under only some of the keys. It also prints two that aren’t Shift jobs in Roland’s lists:
DJ MODEunder D/I and E/J, which you press together to enter DJ mode, andCURRENT PADunder REMAIN, which the manual doesn’t explain. - The small orange labels on the pads, such as
CUEandSYNC, are for DJ mode. - VALUE has
PUSH ENTERprinted by it, because you press it to confirm as well as turn it.

SP-404 Mk2 Beginner's Guide (Part 1): Setup, Sampling, Recording & Chopping
Chris Laps
A patient 25-minute start, from setup and SD cards to recording and chopping. Parts 2 and 3, also listed here, pick up effects and patterns.
Read the screen and the lights
The screen you’ll see most is the top screen, which appears as soon as the 404 is ready to play. The strip along the top tells you where you are and how the selected sample is set up, and the large number below it is that sample’s tempo. The other screens replace it as you work, and EXIT brings you back.
The top screen
| On screen | What it tells you |
|---|---|
P-1 | The current project. |
A-1 | The selected sample’s bank and number: here, bank A, sample 1. |
BUS-1 | The BUS FX the sample is assigned to (Send each sample to a bus). |
Fix or Vel | Whether FIXED VELOCITY is on (Fix) or off (Vel) (Control how hard the pads hit). |
DC, USB or BAT | What’s powering the unit: the AC adaptor, the USB port or batteries (Three ways to power it). |
| The large number | The BPM of the selected sample (Give a sample its tempo). |
Moving around
- Turn VALUE to move a cursor, pick an item or change a value. Press it to confirm or to carry out what’s selected.
- Turn CTRL 1–CTRL 3 to edit the parameters on the current screen. On tabbed setting screens such as
SYSTEM, CTRL 3 picks the tab. - Press EXIT to go back a screen or back out of what you’re doing.
- Hold REMAIN to see the settings of the sample on the selected pad, or how long it has left while it’s playing (What the Remain button does).
What the lights mean
| What you see | What it means |
|---|---|
| Pads lit orange | You’re in sample mode, and the pads play samples. |
| Pads lit purple | These pads hold patterns (Play back your patterns). |
| A pad lit white | The pattern on that pad is playing. |
| Pads blinking blue | You’re not in sample mode. Press EXIT a few times, then PATTERN SELECT. |
| A pad lit red | That pad is muted (Mute a pad on the fly). |
| Pads blinking red | After you press REC, these are the empty pads you can record to (Record a new sample). |
| Bank button lit or blinking | Lit means bank A–E, and blinking means bank F–J (Play a pad and switch banks). |
| BUS FX lit or blinking orange | Lit means BUS 1 is selected, and blinking means BUS 2 (Turn an effect on from the keys). |
| EXT SOURCE lit, or blinking red | Lit means the external input is on. Blinking red means the input level is too high and may distort (Plug in a synth, mic or guitar). |
| GATE blinking slowly | One-shot playback is on (Play a sample through without interruption). |
| LOOP blinking | The sample is set to a ping-pong loop (Loop forwards, backwards or both ways). |
| MARK blinking | The skip-back memory is recording (Save what you just played with skip-back). |
If the screen seems to misbehave
- The effect screen keeps disappearing. It goes back to the previous screen after a few seconds without input. Hold REMAIN and press the effect button to pin it (Edit an effect and keep your settings).
- A knob doesn’t change a value straight away. In
Catchmode, a knob only takes effect once it reaches the stored value. TheEdit Knob ModeandEFX Knob Modesettings choose how knobs behave, though DJ mode always usesCatch(Every system setting). - Pop-ups get in the way.
Pop-up Timeshortens them or turns them off (Every system setting). - An icon appears in the lower-left corner. Live mode is on, and some buttons won’t respond (Lock the risky buttons for a gig).
Everything on the Shift button
Hold SHIFT and press a pad or button to reach its second job. You’ll use these constantly, because they open most of the 404’s screens, and the words printed under the pads and some of the keys remind you which is which. This list is the hub: each row is a quick reminder, and its link goes to the full explanation.

What holding the Value knob does
You’ll turn and press VALUE all day, but it also works as a modifier if you hold it down. These shortcuts are mostly performance moves: picking a pad without making a sound while the music plays, or stabbing an effect in for a single beat.
Hold Value and press
- Hold VALUE + PAD
- Picks a sample silently, or picks a pattern without starting it when PATTERN SELECT is lit.
- Hold VALUE + EFFECT
- Makes the effect button momentary, so the effect is on only while you keep it pressed. See Apply an effect only while you hold its key.
- Hold VALUE + CTRLS
- Edits the effect’s sub-parameters, on effects that have them. See Edit an effect and keep your settings.
- Hold VALUE + BUS FX
- Takes BUS 3 and BUS 4 out of the sound for now, without changing your
FAVORITEsetting. See Set the effects on BUS 3 and BUS 4 and Load a saved BUS 3 and BUS 4 set-up. - Hold VALUE + SUB PAD
- Evens out the tiny timing gaps when you trigger several samples together.
- Hold VALUE + GATE
- Turns one-shot playback on or off. See Play a sample through without interruption.
Other buttons that team up with the knob
- Hold MFX and turn VALUE to choose a multi-effect (Pick any effect from the MFX list).
- Hold REMAIN and turn VALUE to scroll through a sample’s details (What the Remain button does).
- Hold ROLL and turn VALUE to shorten a roll that’s playing (Repeat a sample with rolls), or to set the root note in chromatic mode (Play one sample across the pads in key).
- Hold SHIFT and press VALUE to choose what MARK calls up (Everything on the Shift button).
- While the effect edit screen is pinned, press VALUE to move between main and sub-parameters, on effects that have both (Edit an effect and keep your settings).

10 Powerful SP-404-MK2 Shortcuts You NEED TO KNOW!
SPVIDZ
Ten held-button shortcuts filmed in 2026, from selecting pads silently to swapping bus effects and protecting a bank.
Bank-wide jobs with Del and Copy
Pressed on their own, DEL and COPY deal with one pad at a time (Protect banks and delete samples, Swap and copy pads and banks). Hold one and press something else and it reaches much further. That makes these handy for clearing the decks or duplicating a bank to try ideas on, and it’s also why they deserve some care.
Hold Del and press
- DEL + EXIT
- Opens
DELETE BANK, to clear all the samples or patterns in a bank. See Protect banks and delete samples and Swap, copy, extract and delete patterns. - DEL + MARK
- Wipes the effect moves captured with EFX MOTION REC from this pattern. See Automate your effect moves. On the pattern edit screen
- DEL + REVERSE
- Wipes the pad mute moves captured with PAD MUTE MOTION REC from this pattern. See Automate pad mutes. On the pattern edit screen
Hold Copy and press
- COPY + EXIT
- Opens the bank copy screen, to duplicate a whole bank of samples or patterns into another bank. See Swap and copy pads and banks and Swap, copy, extract and delete patterns.
On the pitch/speed and envelope screens, COPY works like REMAIN, but on a mute group instead of a bank. Hold it while you change a parameter, and the change reaches the other samples in the same mute group (Let samples cut each other off). That lets you treat a group of related sounds, such as a set of hi-hats, as a single instrument. The parameters are the same as for REMAIN (What the Remain button does).
What you can edit across a mute group
| Screen | Parameters |
|---|---|
| Pitch/speed (Change a sample’s pitch and speed) | SPEED, PITCH, VOLUME, PAN, BPM, BPM SYNC, GATE, LOOP, REVERSE |
| Envelope (Fade a sample in and out) | ATTACK, HOLD, RELEASE, BPM SYNC, GATE, LOOP, REVERSE |
Edit a mute group at once
- Hold COPY + CTRLS
- Changes that knob’s parameter for the samples in the mute group. On the pitch/speed or envelope screen
- Hold COPY + BPM SYNC
- Changes
BPM SYNCfor the samples in the mute group. On the pitch/speed or envelope screen - Hold COPY + GATE
- Changes
GATEfor the samples in the mute group. On the pitch/speed or envelope screen - Hold COPY + LOOP
- Changes
LOOPfor the samples in the mute group. On the pitch/speed or envelope screen - Hold COPY + REVERSE
- Changes
REVERSEfor the samples in the mute group. On the pitch/speed or envelope screen
One more held button: MFX
- MFX + DJFX LOOPER
- Shows the MFX list from effect 17 onwards, so the pads can pick those. See Pick any effect from the MFX list.
- MFX + ISOLATOR
- Shows the MFX list from effect 33 onwards, so the pads can pick those. See Pick any effect from the MFX list.

10 Powerful SP-404-MK2 Shortcuts You NEED TO KNOW!
SPVIDZ
Ten held-button shortcuts filmed in 2026, from selecting pads silently to swapping bus effects and protecting a bank.
How sound travels through the 404
Knowing the order in which the 404 treats sound answers practical questions, such as why an effect isn’t touching a sample, where to fix distortion and what ends up in a resample. There are two sources, your samples and the external inputs. Each one takes its own route to a shared set of bus effects and a mixer, and the mix then splits to the outputs.
From samples to the mixer
- A sample plays on a voice. The 404 has 32 voices to share among the project’s 160 samples.
- The voice applies the sample’s volume, pan and envelope, along with its pitch shift and speed.
- The sample’s bus setting sends the sound one of two ways. BUS 1 or BUS 2 leads into
BUS FX, and DRY goes aroundBUS FXto the mixer. - The output of
BUS FXjoins the mixer.
From the inputs to the mixer
INPUTpasses through theMIC/GUITARswitch and GAIN.LINE INjoins after this point, so those two controls only affectINPUT.- The combined signal passes through the
Attenuator, when it’s on, and then theNoise Gate. - USB audio joins here if the
USB INsetting isLINE IN. - Everything goes through
INPUT FX, then aLEVELcontrol, then the EXT SOURCE on/off switch. - The
INPUT BUSsetting sends it on. BUS 1 or BUS 2 leads intoBUS FX, and DRY goes straight to the mixer.
From the mixer to the outputs
- USB audio joins the mix just after the mixer if
USB INisMIX OUT, so it skipsINPUT FXandBUS FX. - The mix then splits into three feeds, and VOLUME sets the level of all three.
LINE OUTgoes through aLimiter, its own gain setting, then aClipper.PHONEShas its ownLimiter, gain setting andClipper.USBonly has a gain setting. It takes the mix from before USB audio joins, so audio arriving throughMIX OUTisn’t sent back out over USB.
Sampling taps this path through the ROUTING setting, then a LEVEL control (Set up a recording). Mix takes the full mix after the mixer but before VOLUME, so it includes your bus effects and doesn’t change when you move VOLUME. ExtIn takes the external inputs just after the EXT SOURCE switch, so it includes INPUT FX but not BUS FX.
Inside BUS FX, BUS 1 and BUS 2 feed BUS 3 and BUS 4, and the DRY signal can optionally enter just before BUS 3. See Put BUS 1 and BUS 2 in series or in parallel and Find your way around the effect settings.
Putting this to use
| If… | Look at |
|---|---|
| A mic or guitar sounds distorted | GAIN, which sits at the very start of the INPUT path (Plug in a synth, mic or guitar) |
LINE IN sounds distorted | The Attenuator setting on the GAIN tab (Every system setting) |
| An input is noisy | The Noise Gate setting on the GAIN tab (Every system setting) |
| An effect isn’t touching a sample | Whether the sample is on DRY or the other bus (Send each sample to a bus) |
| One output is too quiet or too hot | The LINE OUT, PHONES OUT and USB OUT gain settings, which only affect their own output (Every system setting) |
| USB audio should skip the effects | Set USB IN to MIX OUT (Bring in audio from a computer or phone, Every system setting) |
When the screen shows an error
The 404’s error messages are short, and most of them have a simple fix. Find yours below. The one that calls for real care is Storage Error!, because the suggested fix can erase your work.
Error messages
| Message | What’s wrong | What to do |
|---|---|---|
Battery Low! | The batteries have almost run out. | Fit fresh ones or move to the AC adaptor (Three ways to power it). |
Unsupported FILE | The 404 can’t use this type of file. | Check its extension, its format and the folder it’s in (Bring audio in from an SD card). |
No SD CARD! | The 404 can’t find a card, either because the slot is empty or the card isn’t pushed all the way in. | Switch off, seat the card fully, and switch on again. |
Unsupported SD Card! | The card is a type the 404 doesn’t support. | Format the card (Prepare an SD card). |
SD CARD Protected! | The card is set to write-protected. | Release the lock switch on the left side of the card. |
SD CARD Full! | The card has no free space left. | Clear out data you don’t need. |
Internal Storage Full! | The 404’s own storage is running out of room. | Delete data you don’t need from the unit (Protect banks and delete samples, Copy and delete projects). |
Storage Error! | Something has gone wrong with the internal storage. | Try a factory reset, and read the warning below first (Return the 404 to its factory state). |
Protected! | Bank protect is blocking what you tried to do. | Switch to an unprotected bank, or lift the protection on this one (Protect banks and delete samples, Swap, copy, extract and delete patterns). |
Max Length Pattern | The pattern has reached the most notes the sequencer can record. | Thin out the notes, or record a shorter pattern and split your part across more than one (Record a pattern as you play). |
